Statement of Intent for Art and Design

Rationale

Art stimulates creativity and imagination and gives all children a means to express themselves by recording experiences and ideas. Using a range of media, children will acquire different artistic skills to communicate confidently; using artwork to articulate thoughts and feelings that might be hard to convey with language. Through learning about the life and works of established artists, children will become inspired to produce their own artworks.

Years 1-6 National Curriculum: Art and design

Curriculum design for Art and Design:

The design of our Art curriculum is supported by the Cornerstones resources. As the children progress through the school, we teach a layering of knowledge and skills for Art, mainly through cross-curricular topics. Although some content may be taught discretely, this means that Art is not taught in isolation, and wherever appropriate it is linked to other areas of the curriculum, giving children the opportunities to develop and reinforce knowledge and skills already established in context.
