WELCOME TO HAWK CLASS!

We are really excited to welcome our new Hawks for an amazing year of learning. We have lots of interesting topics planned and are looking forward to working with a new group of Y5 children.

Hawk class is taught by Miss Baker,  assisted by Mrs Bartlett, Miss Pickford and Mrs Spearing.

PE days are Thursday  and Friday. Please ensure your child has a full PE kit  that they keep in school. They will need a tracksuit or leggings and trainers for outdoor PE.

Link books need to be in school every day. Please make sure that you are reading at least five times a week.

We are starting our new topic for term 3 which is called 'Stargazers'. During this term we will be investigating planets and learning all about them. We will be taking a look at the moon and how it orbits the Earth! We had a fantastic hook event and have a very exciting trip to the Space Aeronautical Museum in Bristol later on this term!

For our hook event, we all came back to school in the evening to do some stargazing! We were so lucky that it was such a clear night and we got to see so many stars and constellations. After stargazing, we finished the evening with some hot chocolate and biscuits. Have a look at some of the pictures of the event below.

In science this term we have been looking at materials. This week we looked at reversible and irreversible changes. We did an experiment where we saw a change happen. Our investigation looked at how carbon dioxide gas is created when you mix vinegar with bicarbonate of soda! It was so much fun! Take a look at some of the pictures of the experiment below and maybe even have another go at home!

This week we had a fire safety session from Dorset & Wiltshire Fire & Rescue Service. We learnt how to make choices that keep us and others safe as well as what to do in an emergency. We were then spilt into fire watch groups and given evidence to work out how a fire started, how did people know there was a fire and what advice we would give to stop it happening again. Have a look at some of the pictures of the session below!

Year 5 children were lucky enough to attend Dorcan and be apart of the Swindon Youth Festival of Literature. We spent the afternoon with Gareth P Jones! He is an author who has produced many books such as The Thornthwaite Inheritance, The Considine Curse and the Solve Your Own Mystery series. We all had such a great time where Gareth played some music for us, answered our questions and told us all about some of his books. Some of us managed to get a book signed by the author! Take a look below at some of the pictures from the event!

We are starting a new topic this term 'A Child's War'. This topic is all about World War 2! We had a fantastic hook day. During our WW2 hook, we sang songs which were popular at the time and were used to raise moral. We practised sheltering from an air raid and read letters from evacuated children. We found out about rationing, planned a menu and even made our own butter! It was delicious! We also learned how to put bandages on wounded soldiers. We all had a great time!
